Prepare for Your First Online Tutoring Lesson

A little preparation helps you use your first online lesson well.

Confirm the practical details

Check the agreed time, lesson platform and joining instructions with our team. Test your internet connection, microphone and camera beforehand. Choose a quiet space, charge your device and make sure you can read your study material comfortably.

Younger learners may need a parent or guardian to help with the initial setup. If you are joining from a different time zone, confirm the time difference.

Give your tutor a clear starting point

Share your subject, grade or course, curriculum and current topic. A few questions, recent marked work or teacher feedback can help the tutor understand where you need support.

Include the date and topic scope of any upcoming assessment. For Cambridge tuition, share the syllabus code and qualification level. For university support, send the module outline and the concepts you want to understand.

Get your materials ready

Keep your textbook, notes, stationery and subject equipment nearby. Have your usual calculator ready for Maths or Physical Sciences. For Accounting, prepare both the question and its supporting information.

Ask the team how best to share documents. Use material you are permitted to share and avoid including unnecessary personal details in screenshots.

Choose a realistic learning goal

A useful goal could be understanding one method, correcting a recurring error or finding out which earlier skill needs attention. Tell the tutor what you have already tried and where you become unsure.

You do not need to arrive knowing the answers. Be ready to explain your thinking, attempt questions and ask for another explanation when something is unclear.

Make the learning stick

After the lesson, summarise the main idea in your own words and retry a question independently. Keep a short record of what is clearer and what still needs attention. Use this to prepare for your next session.

For more focused practice, explore our Grade 12 Maths revision plan. Lessons can support your learning, while your own practice helps build independence.
